Discover the magnificent masterpiece of 10th-century Armenian ecclesiastical architecture at Tsakhats Kar Monastery, nestled in the Yeghegis Valley as a testament to the golden age of the Bagratid kingdom. Then ascend to the formidable Smbataberd fortress, perched approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, revealing panoramic views of three neighboring monasteries—Holy Nshan, Zorats, and Tsakhats Kar. This expedition takes you on a journey through time and medieval Armenian engineering excellence and strategic genius. The rough valley approach to both sites is left to the 4x4 and a professional driver familiar with the Yeghegis tracks, which shortens the walk to the fortress considerably; a professional guide leads the final stretch on foot at a comfortable pace, so the ridge is reachable for most visitors rather than only for practised walkers.

Travel Plan

Start Point: Yerevan

Tsakhats Kar Monastery

Constructed in the 10th century during Armenia's golden age under the Bagratid kingdom (984-1029 AD), Tsakhats Kar rose as both a place of worship and a center of learning and manuscript illumination. The monastery's name, translating to "Flowering Stone," reflects the tradition of pictorial decoration and religious artistry. Built from polished basalt, the main St. Karapet church displays ornamental carvings and magnificent architectural elements, particularly in its decorated windows and stone porch. This meticulously restored (2013) monastic complex, accompanied by two earlier adjacent churches, remains a masterpiece of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical architecture.

Smbataberd Fortress

The imposing ruins of Smbataberd crown the summit of the Vardenis mountain range at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, commanding the southern trade routes to the Dzoraget gorge. Protected on three sides by impregnable gorges and connected to the mountain range by a narrow isthmus to the north, the fortress was further reinforced with double pyramidal walls, demonstrating the advancement in medieval military engineering. Inside, the remnants of the citadel, residential structures, and water cisterns tell of its former importance as the most critical military stronghold for Yeghegis village and surrounding communities. Following reconstruction in 2006-2007, the "Smbataberd" historical-cultural reserve, established in 2018, preserves this strategic heights as a testament to Armenia's medieval defensive architecture.
